It is very hard to find good clean official footage of Danny Carey playing. This is not a best of, or a show case of what either drummer can do. The other option is to have still photos playing to a song… very lame There is no bias from ratemydrums regarding either player. Both videos are of Danny and Mike playing with there respective bands, both have about the same time and both contain drummers playing to backing tracks and live footage. I believe this is wrong as neither drummer asked to be judged or entered into a competition. This is NOT what I am trying to do. @jlcsdrummer ehh portnoy is great but he gets way more attetention tha ncarey your right there but songs like stream of consceiness and universal mind those are god liek drums

@oblisk94xxx i agree. i have to say i prefer Danny’s style, but at the same time Mike Portnoy is very precise. danny is for sure much more musical and powerful with his drums. but at the same time, i dont like comparing two drummer gods. i think they should do a drum duett. that would be SICK!

@STRMetalBand lol someone said Lars Ulrich. Lars Ulrich’s even worse than Travis Barker. He doesnt even come close to even the highly overrated Neil Peart.
M.Portnoy for me just like the clean style
In the clip that starts from 1:27 where DC is drumming to Parabola (improvised might I add) you can almost hear the silent awe of the crowd. It’s seriously unbelievable.
Danny Carey is the more soulful and powerful drummer; while Portnoy is the more over-rated and over-exposed drummer. Carey plays for the songs, Portnoy plays to win awards and endorsements.
DT needs some more keyboards.

i’m goin for portnoy. i’m a fan of danny’s work on the drums, but in my opinion, it can’t beat the awesomeness of Portnoy.

Seriously?! It is obvious to me that Carey is the superiour drummer.
i would personally say mike portnoy but the vid doesnt capture the entire picture of either drummer. in liquid tension experiment portnoy showcases his nice groove that u dont see much in DT. Also in transatlantic u hear him drum to music that is almost yes like. He has many unique styles to him outside of DT as well. Also Danny Carey accents the rest of the music beautifully without goin over the top, almost as good as Gavin Harrison does (another phenominal drummer btw!)
Dany Carey looks like a musical virtuoso, Mike Portnoy looks like a spandex warrior.
carey, to me, is better because he is more coordinated and rhythmical

i like carey, but i might have a bias, huge tool fan…..both are great though
